N or P deficiency can reduce the amount of tuber initiation and bulking that occurs. Foliar phosphate applications as a compliment to soil applied programmes can be tremendously effective primarily because the farmer can control the time of phosphate uptake. Uptake around tuber initiation stimulates more tubers while later encourages bulking.
